The Conti Ransomware Attack on Bank Indonesia

The Conti ransomware gang has attacked the Bank Indonesia. The bank disclosed on January 20th, 2022, that a ransomware attack hit its networks the month before but that its operations had not been disrupted. Attackers reportedly stole “non-critical data” belonging to Bank Indonesia employees before deploying ransomware payloads on over a dozen systems on the bank’s network. The bank reportedly mitigated the incident before public services were impacted.

The Conti ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack, leaking some files allegedly stolen from Bank Indonesia. The group claims to have stolen 13.88GB of data from the organization. Conti never leaked the stolen data, suggesting Bank Indonesia paid the ransom.

Conti's Background and Impact

Conti has been active since September 2020 and may have spawned the more recent Royal ransomware strain. Conti is an advanced RaaS (Ransomware-as-a-Service) platform with considerable security tool evasion capabilities. Conti is noted for some very high-profile attacks against the governments of Costa Rica and Peru, as well as critical infrastructure providers.

Conti was one of the most active attack groups going into 2022, but in May, the group began shutting down its attack infrastructure and was assumed to be rebranding or splintering into smaller RaaS operations. Conti ransomware has netted hundreds of millions of dollars in ransom payments and leveled a $40 million ransom demand against a Florida school district.
