Delfin Design Hit by Play Ransomware Group in Major Data Breach
Ransomware Attack on Delfin Design & Manufacturing by Play Ransomware Group
Recently, Delfin Design & Manufacturing, a boutique manufacturer in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, fell victim to the Play ransomware group. Renowned for its designer foodservice ware, Delfin has been a key player in the manufacturing industry since 1991, catering to sectors like restaurants, hospitality, and cruise lines. With around 46 employees and an annual revenue of $8 million, Delfin is classified as a small to medium-sized enterprise.
On November 7, Delfin discovered an attack targeting its online infrastructure, resulting in a significant data breach. The Play ransomware group, active since June 2022, has orchestrated numerous high-profile attacks across various industries. Known for their sophisticated network infiltration techniques, they often exploit vulnerabilities in RDP servers and Microsoft Exchange. The breach at Delfin led to the exposure of 94GB of sensitive data, potentially compromising critical operational and client information.
What sets Play ransomware apart is their unique approach of omitting an initial ransom demand in their notes, instead instructing victims to reach out via email. This strategy, along with their deployment of custom tools like Grixba, positions them as a significant threat in the cybercrime arena. Their operations have expanded from Latin America to North America and Europe, targeting diverse sectors such as IT, transportation, and critical infrastructure.
Delfin's dedication to onshore manufacturing and innovative design distinguishes it in the competitive foodservice market. However, these attributes also make it a prime target for cybercriminals aiming to disrupt operations and extract valuable data. This incident highlights the escalating ransomware threat to small and medium-sized enterprises, which often struggle to defend against advanced cyber threats.
