Wianno Club Hit by Ransomware Attack

Wianno Club, a private member club in Barnstable, Mass. has been hit with a ransomware attack. Lockbit ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the incident, posting Wianno Club to its data leak site on May 26. Wianno Club is yet to confirm or deny the incident. Lockbit has claimed it will publish all stolen data on June 15 if Wianno Club fails to pay the ransom. It’s unclear how what Lockbit is demanding to decrypt the stolen data or when the ransom deadline will be.

Wianno Club is a historic private member club perched on a bluff overlooking the Nantucket Sound. The current Clubhouse was built in 1888, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and is the centre of Wianno Historic District.

Lockbit ransomware is designed to block user access to computer systems in exchange for a ransom payment. It was first identified in 2019 and has previously targeted organizations in the US, China, India, Indonesia, and various European countries. It is a subclass of ransomware called ‘crypto virus’ as it forms ransom requests around financial payment in exchange for decryption. It focuses mostly on enterprises and government organizations rather than individuals. It functions as a Ransomware-as-a-Service operation.
