Northeast Florida Community Action Agency Suffers Ransomware Attack by Lockbit2
The Northeast Florida Community Action Agency (NFCAA), a non-profit organization that serves Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam, and St. Johns Counties, has recently fallen victim to a ransomware attack perpetrated by the Lockbit2 group. This incident was disclosed on the group's dark web leak site.
Since its establishment in 1964, NFCAA has played a pivotal role in enhancing the lives and communities across Northeast Florida. The organization prides itself on its core values, which include honesty/integrity, quality, responsibility, respect, stewardship and accountability, and a customer-focused approach. Its mission is centered around stabilizing households and fostering self-sufficiency.
Among the various services offered by NFCAA, its website details programs such as utility assistance, which provides direct payments to utility companies on behalf of families at risk of electricity disconnection. Additionally, NFCAA administers the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Data Busters STEAM Program, and the Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSSP).
While the specific vulnerabilities exploited in the attack were not disclosed, it is widely recognized that ransomware groups like Lockbit2 can leverage weaknesses such as outdated software, unpatched systems, or insufficient password security to initiate their attacks. Lockbit2, in particular, is notorious for its attacks on various sectors, including healthcare, education, and government, often demanding ransoms for the decryption of the victim's data.
As of now, NFCAA has not released any public statements regarding the ransomware attack. It is imperative for the organization to adhere to recommended best practices for ransomware attack mitigation, which include regular data backups, software updates, and the enforcement of robust password policies.
