Seattle Institute of East Asian Medicine (SIEAM) Suffers Ransomware Attack by Lockbit3

The Seattle Institute of East Asian Medicine (SIEAM) has reported a ransomware attack by the group Lockbit3, as announced on their dark web leak site. The educational institution, which operates in the Education sector, has been targeted by the threat actor, who has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Victim Profile

SIEAM is located at 6363 7th Ave South, Seattle, WA 98108. The institution is now accepting applications for the next year's cohort, starting September 2024. SIEAM has two graduate programs in East Asian medicine, master’s and doctorate. The institution has a library donated by Chip Chace, consisting of over 1,000 books on East Asian medicine, over 75% in Chinese. SIEAM is currently raising funds to support infrastructure for the library and establish a fund to support an annual visiting scholar.

Vulnerabilities and Mitigation

Ransomware attacks can cause significant downtime, data loss, intellectual property theft, and in certain industries, a data breach. To mitigate the risks of ransomware attacks, organizations should follow best practices such as disconnecting infected devices from the network, determining the scope of the infection, and determining if data or credentials have been stolen. Additionally, early detection and prevention are crucial in the battle against ransomware.

The ransomware attack on SIEAM by Lockbit3 underscores the imperative for organizations to remain vigilant against cyber threats and to implement robust security measures to safeguard against such attacks. SIEAM, akin to many other educational institutions, is susceptible to being targeted by threat actors, necessitating the adoption of appropriate measures to secure their systems and data.
