Ransomware Attack on Ipsotek LTD by BlackSuit
Victim Overview
Ipsotek LTD, a pioneer in artificial intelligence-powered video analytics solutions, was recently targeted in a ransomware attack by the group BlackSuit. Established in 2001 and headquartered in London, United Kingdom, Ipsotek operates in the software sector, specializing in security and surveillance solutions for various industries such as transportation, retail, and smart cities. The company has completed over 800 successful projects in 44 countries across 16+ industries, with a global presence and proven technology.
Attack Details
BlackSuit, a new ransomware family closely related to the notorious Royal ransomware group, successfully breached Ipsotek's network and downloaded 995GB of sensitive data to an encrypted offline server within 12 hours. The compromised data includes AI models, client information, financial records, software builds, coding data, contracts, NDAs, and more. Additionally, files stored in Ipsotek's OneDrive, such as employee personal information and shareholder details, were also leaked.
Ransomware Group Profile
BlackSuit is a ransomware group that emerged in 2023 and shares significant similarities with the Royal ransomware group. It targets both Windows and Linux systems, including VMware ESXi servers, and appends the .blacksuit extension to encrypted files. The ransom note left by BlackSuit includes instructions for victims to contact the operators via a Tor chat site.
Attack Vector
The attackers behind BlackSuit exploited security lapses in Ipsotek's network, notably due to negligence in securing passwords and notes by Alexander Slater. This vulnerability allowed the threat actors to penetrate the company's systems and exfiltrate a large volume of sensitive data within a short timeframe.
