Ransomware Attack on Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC), a key player in healthcare education, has been targeted by the newly identified ransomware group, INTERLOCK. This attack has caused significant disruption across its campuses, impacting both educational and healthcare services.

About Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

TTUHSC, part of the Texas Tech University System since 1969, includes six schools such as the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing, with locations in Lubbock, Amarillo, and other West Texas areas. Employing between 5,001 and 10,000 staff, it is dedicated to addressing healthcare disparities in rural communities. Its extensive research and educational programs contribute significantly to the healthcare sector, producing a large number of healthcare professionals each year.

Details of the Ransomware Attack

The INTERLOCK group claims to have extracted 3.2 TB of sensitive data from TTUHSC, including patient records and medical research. The attack on September 30 disrupted operations, affecting phone lines and online patient portals. Although classes resumed on October 16, challenges with email services and other online functions persist. TTUHSC is actively investigating the breach and enhancing security measures to safeguard its network.

Profile of the INTERLOCK Ransomware Group

INTERLOCK is a newly emerged ransomware group known for its double-extortion tactics. After infiltrating a network, they encrypt critical files and exfiltrate data, threatening to leak it if demands are unmet within 96 hours. This strategy heightens financial and reputational risks for victims. Their penetration of TTUHSC’s systems may have been aided by vulnerabilities in the institution’s network security, a common issue for large organizations with complex digital infrastructures.
