Cyber-Attack Hits Municipal Water and Sanitation Company in Balneário Camboriú
The Municipal Water and Sanitation Company (Emasa) in Balneário Camboriú experienced a cyber-attack on the 13th of July. The attack was carried out using Ransomware, a malicious software that blocks access to infected systems and demands a ransom for restoration.
Immediate Response and Measures Taken
Luis Henrique Cardoso, the Financial Director and interim representative for Emasa, confirmed that all computers had up-to-date antivirus protection. The company responsible for the system installation is currently investigating the method used to breach the system's security. "We had the data from the internal network of the Units' internet servers compromised, but the technician managed to contain the Ransomware's access, and we blocked the system. However, it did not affect the commercial sector's data at all, which is hosted by the outsourced company, and therefore, does not reach consumers", explained Luis Henrique. "We are already in the finalization phase of the reference term for hiring an information security solution to protect data at rest", completes the director.
