Ransomware Attack on Nikkei Publishing
An unknown ransomware gang has attacked Nikkei. Nikkei Publishing is a renowned Japanese media company that specializes in providing high-quality journalism and publishing services. With a rich history dating back to 1876, Nikkei Publishing has become a prominent voice in the field of business and financial news. The company is best known for its flagship publication, the Nikkei newspaper, which offers comprehensive coverage of global markets, economic trends, and corporate news. In addition to print media, Nikkei Publishing offers online news platforms and mobile applications.
In addition to the Japan-based Nikkei newspaper, Nikkei, Inc owns and publishes the Nikkei Asia weekly news magazine and the London-headquartered Financial Times newspaper. The group also includes the TX Network, which owns the flagship TV Tokyo station.
Details of the Attack
The organization published a press release on May 19, 2022, confirming the attack. "Unauthorized access to the server was first detected on May 13, prompting an internal probe," the release said. "Nikkei Group Asia immediately shut down the affected server and took other measures to minimize the impact. The affected server likely contained customer data, and Nikkei is currently in the process of determining the nature and scope of the attack," Nikkei added. Although it's unclear who carried out the attack, the fact that no data has been published suggests that Nikkei paid a ransom.
